La Guillotière gallery

Guillotière is a district of the city of Lyon, on the left bank of the Rhone. This area is characterized by its social and ethnic diversity. The bridge of Guillotière has long been the only bridge of Lyon on the Rhône, which gave the suburb of Guillotière the unique status of "gateway" on the east of the city. This role has persisted over time, and today, immigrant populations are numerous, and follow the course of the great waves of immigration: Italians in the nineteenth century, then people from Maghreb, Turkey or Asia later. Because of recent social evolutions, the district loses a bit this role, following the way of return of people from the middle class (formerly living in houses on the outskirts), in the city centers. Proximity to universities is also promoting the students’ installation. Many buildings are there now renovated or rebuilt. Those recent evolutions participate in a process of gentrification of the neighborhood.
